Superyacht designs are constantly advancing, with many owners now specifying increasingly complex features such as multiple helidecks, pushing the boundaries of innovation and engineering.
These advancements can introduce significant safety challenges, which must be carefully assessed and integrated during the initial design stages to ensure seamless operation and compliance.
To ensure that safety is seamlessly incorporated from the outset, it’s essential to involve experts early in the design process.
The Safeguard Helidecks team collaborate with yacht architects, naval architects and design teams worldwide, ensuring critical elements – such as deck loading, emergency protocols, air flow disruptions and optimal placement of helideck equipment – are meticulously planned and incorporated into the yacht’s design.
This proactive approach not only ensures that safety and style are maintained, but also streamlines the certification process for the yacht’s helideck. Addressing these key requirements early, helps to prevent costly or time-consuming adjustments later down the line.
Once the design complies with regulations and is approved interim visits are conducted throughout the build to support construction teams and advise project managers on outfitting aviation facilities.
At the end of the build phase a Helicopter Landing Area Technical Certificate (HLATC) is issued to confirm the helideck aligns with the approved General Arrangements. Required by the Flag State, this certificate forms part of the official documentation transferred from the build yard to the owner’s team. It is not an Operational Certificate.
The HLATC will remain valid as long as the design remains unchanged. Any modifications will require a new certificate to be issued.
Once the yacht is commissioned and operational, Safeguard Helidecks provides annual certification that ensure ongoing regulatory compliance.
